Lawyer Explains Why Ex-Detroit Mayor Missed Payment: He Must Live Lavishly
A lawyer for Kwame Kilpatrick has filed a motion seeking to delay a hearing on a missed restitution payment that claims the former Detroit mayor has to live lavishly for his job as a sales representative.
A probation violation hearing is scheduled for Friday, the Detroit Free Press reports. Kilpatrick, a former lawyer, missed a $79,000 restitution payment called for in a plea bargain in two criminal cases. The plea stems from racy text messages showing Kilpatrick lied under oath in police whistle-blower litigation.
Kilpatrick lives in a “tony Dallas suburb,” the Free Press says, and makes $120,000 a year working for a subsidiary of Compuware.
“The clientele he must establish a rapport with are likely to be the privileged and the affluent,” Hajji said in a motion filed with an appeals court. “Burgers and beer at the local bar is not going to be sufficient.”
“The trial court appears to infer that it wants Mr. Kilpatrick to live a middle-class existence, when such an existence is inconsistent with earning a sufficient amount to fulfill his restitution obligation,” the motion says.
