A lawyer who helped obtain a $1.25 billion settlement for thousands of Holocaust victims told the New Jersey Supreme Court yesterday that he didn’t misappropriate any client funds.

Lawyer Edward Fagan is accused of taking $400,000 in settlement and estate funds from clients, including two Holocaust survivors, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports. Fagan said he was due the money for valid legal work, according to the New Jersey Law Journal.

“I didn’t misappropriate a penny of client funds,” Fagan said.

Fagan said he had trouble documenting his claim because the New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics had stolen his documents in the probe, according to the Star-Ledger.

A 2007 story in the St. Petersburg Times says Fagan “has sued everyone from the South African government to the makers of the movie Borat.” He filed for bankruptcy protection in 2007, the story says.
