Lawyer held in lieu of $2M bail, accused of shooting his wife in a domestic violence case
A southern California lawyer is being held in lieu of $2 million bail on attempted murder charges in a domestic violence case, accused of shooting his wife at his home last week.
Mark Madrigali called 911 in the early hours of June 12 to report that she was injured. On Friday, he pleaded not guilty in the case, which includes multiple counts of attempted murder. He is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence, reports Bakersfield Now, a site for KBAK and KBFX news.
Authorities say they found several weapons at the Bakersfield home and believe a shotgun was used in the alleged attack.
Madrigali’s lawyer, Mark Anthony Raimondo, urged against a rush to judgment and said Madrigali, who focuses his practice on driving-under-the-influence cases, is well-regarded personally and professionally.
Madrigali’s wife remains hospitalized, and her current condition is unknown. It was reported as critical Thursday after surgery, according to the Bakersfield Californian (reg. req.).
If convicted of all of the counts he is facing, Madrigali would face a life prison term.
The newspaper says Madrigali’s wife had sued for divorce last year, but did not pursue the case. He was previously disciplined by the state bar after a conviction for driving under the influence.
