Lawyer is acquitted in alleged plot to bribe a witness after another attorney is convicted
A lawyer sobbed when Rhode Island jurors acquitted her on Tuesday in an alleged plot to bribe a stabbing victim not to testify.
Lawyer Donna Uhlmann was acquitted on all four counts, the Providence Journal reports. She had been charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice, bribery of a witness and conspiracy to commit bribery. Also acquitted of conspiracy on Tuesday was the man who was accused in the stabbing, Jamaal “Dub” Dublin.
Uhlmann had represented the stabbing victim, who testified at trial that she arranged for him to receive “ten stacks,” or $10,000, if he didn’t take the stand. He avoided jail time for his testimony, a fact stressed by Uhlmann’s lawyers, the story says. Defense attorneys also said Uhlmann had an acrimonious relationship with the prosecutors who investigated her.
Dublin’s lawyer, Gerard Donley, was sentenced in September to six years in prison after he was convicted in the alleged plot. He had testified that $6,000 he paid to the girlfriend of the stabbing victim was intended to compensate the victim for his injuries.
