Lawyer is optimistic about collecting $26B judgment against Syria
A Maine lawyer who helped win a $26 billion judgment against Syria last week is optimistic he will be able to collect.
Ron Jenkins of Meridian 361 International Law Group in Portland spoke with the Bangor Daily News about the suit, which claimed Syria supported 1985 terrorist attacks in Rome and Vienna. Jenkins represented 25 victims and relatives, with the help of two Washington, D.C., law firms that served as co-counsel.
“We have an established track record collecting on judgments of this kind,” he told the publication. “I am optimistic we will be successful in this case as well.”
Jenkins said he obtained two confessions from terrorists serving prison sentences in Rome and Vienna that were “extremely helpful.” He has spent more than half of his time on the case since it was filed in 2006.
Jenkins said he became interested in international law after losing several friends in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. “For me this [work] has very significant personal meaning and I derive a great deal of personal satisfaction from it,” Jenkins the the Bangor Daily News.
