A California lawyer is in jail in lieu of $7.5 million bail, accused of participating in a fraudulent property transfer scheme that allegedly reaped $2.2 million in loans and involved the filing of falsified real estate documents.

Investigators in the San Francisco County case also contend that San Jose attorney and real estate broker Melvin Lee Emerich and his client are, as the San Jose Mercury News puts it, “linked to a high-profile homicide in Palm Springs.”

Emerich is being held on suspicion of money-laundering, conspiracy, grand theft, identity theft, forged documents and filing false mortgage documents, the newspaper reports. Its call to his San Jose DUI Firm seeking comment was not returned.
