Washington, D.C., lawyer and lobbyist J.C. Boggs started swimming again in his 40s, when his wife told him he was getting fat and needed some exercise.

At age 46, he set a goal for himself, the Washington Post reports. He would swim in 50 states by age 50. A few laps in hotel pools didn’t count. Instead, the swims had to be challenging.

Boggs has met his goal, the story says. He swam at Alaska’s Chena Lake, in the country’s largest pool at Indiana University’s Natatorium, and with a group coached by an Olympic swimmer. Most of the swims were in conjunction with business trips, but Boggs had to plan one summer vacation to take several states off his list.

Boggs participates in U.S. Masters Swimming for people over age 18. On Friday, Boggs told the ABA Journal he is leaving Blank Rome to join King & Spalding’s government advocacy and public policy practice in Washington, D.C.
