A North Carolina attorney en route to work at a Raleigh courthouse may have saved a fellow motorist’s life on Tuesday morning.

John McWilliam noticed flames under the SUV in front of him as both were headed into a parking garage and shouted to the driver to get out. Luis Ramos complied, but didn’t turn off the engine and stood and watched the flames, the attorney told WRAL. So McWilliam told him to turn off the engine and get away from the burning vehicle.

Then the attorney got the parking lot attendant to raise the barrier arm so he could back his own car out of harm’s way before calling 911.

“When I’m on the phone with the 911 dispatch person, there’s a massive explosion, which she hears,” McWilliam said. “At that point, she gets it. All the other 911 calls are coming in, the sirens are blaring and I leave.”

No one was hurt, and Ramos said he felt fortunate that the attorney was there to warn him of the flames under his SUV.
