A lawyer with plans to develop online games that educate consumers is seeking crowdfunding for one offering, about estate planning.

Stephanie Kimbro writes at Virtual Law Practice that her game, Estate Quest, features a scenario where players are detectives, getting different cases about decedents who didn’t plan their estates properly. The game takes players back in time, leaving animated clues about what the decedent should have had in his or her will—like naming a children’s guardian, providing specific bequests and naming an executor.

Kimbro seeks $20,000 to fund the venture through Rockethub.com. Funding ends May 1.

Kimbro, who is director of online services at the Burton Law Firm in Wilmington, N.C., writes that she wants to learn about how crowdfunding can be used with legal services projects. She’s also working with Illinois Legal Aid Online on a game about landlord-tenant law.

“Building a high-quality game that would be more easily distributed and catch on with the Facebook crowds is expensive,” she writes. “But that’s the audience we need to reach to really share this as a tool for learning legal concepts.”
