Lawyer Sues School for Kicking His Son Out of Honors Class over Copied Homework

A California lawyer says he’s getting lots of hate calls at the office because of news coverage of his suit against his son’s school district.
Jack Berghouse of Redwood City, who practices family law, sued because Sequoia High School kicked his son out of an English honors class for copying someone else’s homework, report the San Mateo County Times and the Palo Alto Daily News.
Berghouse claims a due process violation because the school has conflicting policies on cheating. One talks of immediate removal from the advanced level program, but another says a student won’t be removed until a second plagiarism offense. Berghouse is worried that the punishment will hurt his son’s chances of attending an Ivy League college; the youth is currently a sophomore in high school.
Berghouse told the County Times he’s surprised by the level of animosity the case has generated. “I’m getting a lot of hate calls at my office,” Berghouse said. “I had no freaking idea this would happen.”
