Lawyer Tackles Theft Suspect, Holds Him for an 'Awkward' 20 Minutes

A Spokane lawyer who spotted a man inside his truck at about 6 a.m. last Friday morning took matters into his own hands.

Brant Stevens chased the man, tackled him and held him until police arrived, report the Spokesman-Review and Stevens managed to dial 911 while he was holding the suspect.

“He’d fight for a little bit and then he’d get tired and then he’d stop and he’d try to talk me into letting him up,” Stevens told the Spokesman-Review. “It was kind of an awkward 20 minutes where I’m just laying on the guy waiting for the cops to show up.”

The man said he needed money for Christmas, Stevens told Stevens didn’t let the man go, though, after deciding he had probably ruined the Christmas of his crime victims. “He’s kind of the Grinch,” Stevens said.The broadcast station has raw video of its interview with Stevens.

The suspect, Nathan John Calvert, is accused of residential burglary, car theft and violation of probation, the Spokesman-Review says. Police say Calvert confessed to a two- to three-week string of residential burglaries and car prowlings that totaled 30 to 40 a night.
