A lawyer told police she was attacked at knifepoint by a man who hired her as an escort through a Providence, R.I., newspaper advertisement.

Lawyer Nina Baccala of North Providence told police that William Lapierre tried to stab and rob her after she arrived at his apartment, the Providence Journal reports. She said she was able to fight her attacker off with chemical spray. Police have charged Lapierre with assault with intent to rob, according to the story.

The newspaper obtained records showing Baccala is listed as the president of BCN Enterprises LLC, a business that she incorporated in 2003 as a dating service. Records in the secretary of state’s office say the business provides “assorted gifts, merchandise, personal services,” according to the story.

Baccala graduated cum laude from the New England School of Law in Boston and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in December. She took the Rhode Island bar exam in February and is waiting for the results. She listed her business as “telephone sales” on her Rhode Island bar application, the story says.

Baccala asked the Providence Journal to refrain from publishing her name and said the publicity would ruin her life, the story says. She told the publication she would try to avoid publicity by telling police she made up the attack.
