Lawyer Who Grew Up in Poverty Donates $1M to Food Bank

A Charleston, S.C., trial lawyer who grew up in poverty has donated $1 million to a food bank.

Lawyer Paul Hulsey told the Charleston Post and Courier that he sometimes went hungry as a child. "It wasn't unusual for us to go to school without any breakfast, and sometimes we had no dinner,” he said.

Hulsey was a former partner at plaintiffs law firm Ness Motley, now known as Motley Rice. He left and eventually formed the Hulsey Law Group.

The money will help the Lowcountry Food Bank buy a new facility, which will be named in his honor. The food bank has been located for seven years in a free building at the former Charleston Naval Base, but the lease is ending.
