A well-known Pennsylvania lawyer died Monday, along with his wife and father-in-law, when the small plane he was piloting crashed in North Carolina.

Michael Apfelbaum practiced in Sunbury and served as city solicitor there. He was also known for his work as counsel for a charitable foundation and as a board member for the Sunbury-based Weis Markets and Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.

The Daily Item, WKOK and WNEP have stories.

An avid pilot, Apfelbaum was en route from Sarasota, Florida, to Greensboro, N.C., when he reportedly became disoriented as he was talking to air traffic control. Witnesses on the ground said they could see the plane was in trouble before it crashed and burst into flames, WGHP reports.

An investigation of what caused the crash is ongoing.
