Lawyers are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review a 30-year sentence given to a 12-year-old boy convicted of killing his grandparents.
The cert petition for Christopher Pittman argues the sentence is "unconstitutionally disproportionate as applied to a 12-year-old child," the Associated Press reports. Pittman is represented by lawyers from the University of Texas School of Law.
Pittman’s trial lawyers had argued his actions were influenced by the antidepressant Zoloft. The drug's maker has vigorously disputed those allegations.
