Two Ohio lawyers are charged with obstructing official business after police concluded they blamed their car crash on a black man who didn’t exist.

The lawyers, Kenneth Lewis and Heather Wilsey, have both pleaded not guilty, the Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Police in Elyria questioned the lawyers after their car crashed into a utility pole. Lewis allegedly told police that a black man at a bar offered to drive them because they were both too intoxicated to get behind the wheel. Lewis said the black man fled the scene after the crash.

Wilsey allegedly offered to find or get the name of the man for police. Both Lewis and Wilsey are white.

Police later obtained surveillance video from the bar and said it showed Wilsey getting behind the wheel on the night in question.

A defense lawyer for Lewis declined to comment to the Chronicle-Telegram. A lawyer for Wilsey, Mike Kinlin, said he couldn’t comment because he hadn’t seen all of the evidence yet.
