Lawyers representing Rick Gates in the special counsel probe filed a motion to withdraw on Thursday that says the reasons will be explained in a sealed document.

The withdrawing lawyers are Shanlon Wu of Wu, Grohovsky & Whipple; Walter Mack of Doar Rieck Kaley & Mack; and Annemarie McAvoy of McAvoy Consulting, report Politico, the Washington Post, Salon and the National Law Journal.

Gates once worked for President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort. Gates and Manafort are accused of laundering money obtained in their work on behalf of the former government of Ukraine.

The withdrawal motion was filed following a CNN report that said Gates had added lawyer Tom Green of Sidley Austin to his defense team. CNN says Green is “well-versed in cutting plea deals” and is “one of the biggest names in Washington’s white-collar defense world.”

Green has not entered a formal appearance in the case.
