Attorney Rob Sutherland was having a routine day in court Monday morning.

But out in the courthouse parking lot, his car was having a spectacular meltdown.

A little after 9 a.m., Sutherland’s vehicle erupted into flames, officials in Truro, Nova Scotia, told the Hants Journal and the Truro Daily News.

Photos show the engine compartment engulfed, with the fire shooting up several feet into the air.

Sutherland, who said he had only been at work about 20 minutes and was talking to a prosecutor when he was told about the blaze, pointed out that his day could have been much worse. “I could’ve been driving it,” he said.

During his commute, the vehicle had seemed to be a smoothly functioning machine, he noted.

An investigation is ongoing, but it appears from news reports that the fire was simply a malfunction of some kind.
