An intellectual property litigator who was one of the founders of Steptoe Johnson's office in Century City, Calif., has leapt to the local office of Los Angeles-based Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton.

Partner Michael R. "Mike" Heimbold began work there on Friday, Reuters reports.

He said he made the move because his new firm has a bigger footprint both in California and internationally. Sheppard Mullin has about 600 lawyers in 16 offices throughout the world; Steptoe, which is based in Washington, D.C., has 500 lawyers in nine offices.

Nick Setty, who serves as co-chair of the intellectual property department at Sheppard Mullin, said the firm's patent litigation practice group has doubled from 45 lawyers to almost 90 during the past two years.

A Sheppard Mullin press release provides additional details.
