A lawyer hired by the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada to represent clients facing guardianship proceedings says she has found evidence of overbilling by guardians.

Lawyer Christine Miller was hired after the center began receiving phone calls from people seeking help in guardianship court, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. The position was funded by Las Vegas lawyer Sam Lionel. So far the center has provided representation in 37 guardianship cases.

Miller says the key is providing a lawyer at the start of the guardianship process who can review financial records with the goal of preventing exploitation.

The article says the center is fighting not only to protect those facing guardianship, but also “to change the culture in Southern Nevada, where the practices for most attorneys and guardians have gone unchanged for decades.”
