The Legal Services Corp. has asked Congress for $502.7 million in funding for fiscal year 2017, an increase of $15.8 million over last year’s request.

Congress approved $385 million for the LSC for fiscal 2016, an increase of $10 million from the prior year. But that amount is still below the appropriation of $420 million for fiscal 2010, according to a press release. The budget request is here (PDF).

LSC Board Chair John Levi said in the press release that the increased budget request reflects concern about grantees’ need for funds to help vulnerable Americans access civil justice. “Although organizations funded by LSC have been remarkably resourceful in stretching every dollar, many of our citizens are still left out because of a lack of resources,” Levi said.

Nearly one in three Americans qualified for LSC-funded services at some point in 2014, according to Census data.
