Former Sen. Ted Stevens owes his lawyers at Williams and Connolly between $1 million and $5 million for defending him on corruption charges.
Financial disclosure forms requiring senators to reveal their debts reveal the amount due as of Jan. 3, the Anchorage Daily News reports. The actual legal bill could be higher. Stevens did not disclose legal fees already paid—only the amount he owed at the time of the filing.
The disclosure form asks for a range of debt owed rather than exact amounts, the story says. Stevens checked the box for $1 million to $5 million. Georgetown University law professor Paul Rothstein told the newspaper a $5 million legal bill would be "in the ballpark.”
Last month a federal judge tossed Stevens’ October conviction for lying about gifts, citing alleged prosecutor misconduct. The judge, Emmet Sullivan, appointed a special prosecutor to investigate.
