If you start saving $100 a month when you’re 25, you’ll have $1 million by retirement age. And a similar principle should be kept in mind when young lawyers are trying to make a name for themselves in the profession, says one who has been there.

Don’t worry about immediate results, but keep working steadily to enhance your image and contact list, recommends Ari Kaplan, a onetime associate at McDermott Will & Emery who now works as a legal consultant. Listening when others talk, sending birthday greetings and notes on other occasions, such as when a child starts school, and writing articles on legal topics are among the specific approaches that he recommends in his first book, The Opportunity Maker: Strategies for Inspiring Your Legal Career Through Creative Networking and Business Development, reports the New York Law Journal. Its article is reprinted by New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

“Instead of money, I suggest that you pay into the fund of your future by trying the techniques proposed in this book on a monthly basis, and perhaps more frequently,” he advises young lawyers in his book.
