LinkedIn has filed suit against unknown hackers in federal court in San Francisco, claiming that they created fake accounts in order to obtain data from actual member profiles on the professional networking site.

The practice, known as data scraping, not only violated LinkedIn’s terms of use but federal and state laws against computer fraud, the company contends in its complaint. LinkedIn says the unauthorized activity has been taking place since May and involved thousands of fake accounts, the San Francisco Chronicle reports in an article that includes information from news services.
