Two well-known law firms announced Wednesday that they have signed a letter of intent to merge.

However, partners Locke Lord and Edwards Wildman Palmer haven’t yet voted to OK the potential melding of the two firms, which is subject to what a press release describes as “the negotiation and execution of mutually acceptable transaction documents and partner approval.” If completed, the merger will create a law firm of over 1,000 attorneys in offices in 22 cities.

Texas-based Locke Lord has about 630 attorneys in offices in a dozen U.S. cities, plus London. Edwards Wildman, which is headquartered in Boston, has 450 lawyers in 16 global offices, reports Reuters. Both firms earlier merged within large Chicago-based legal shops.
