Kentucky Defense Lawyer Has Won 28 Med-Mal Cases, Lost Zero Since 1999
Winning a medical malpractice case is rarely, if ever, easy.
But when Donald K. Brown Jr. is on the other side, at least one Louisville, Ky., plaintiff’s lawyer says, his heart sinks. The 60-year-old defense practitioner has won 28 cases straight since 1999, although he did lose one of the 32 cases he has defended during the past 13 years, reports the Louisville Courier-Journal in a lengthy profile of the famed practitioner.
One of Brown’s secrets to success is a skeleton he refers to both as “Dr. Bones” and “the best $200 investment I ever made.” The O’Bryan Brown & Toner partner also credits his wife and unofficial jury consultant, Cheryl Parrot, who he met while she was working as a paralegal for his firm, for both his winning streak and what he describes as something of a Perry Mason moment:
After the plaintiff in one case claimed a loss of consortium due to a botched hip replacement, she noticed something amiss between the man and his wife and helped Brown track down the couple’s divorce papers during a break. The result was another victory for Brown.
“If I had to make a decision about keeping her as a paralegal or as my wife,” he says, “I don’t know what choice I would make.”
