Love of classics led to second career for retired Dewey partner
When Jack Kaufmann retired from law practice in 2002, his firm was known as Dewey Ballantine.
Today Kaufmann is 71 years old and back at work, but his employer is the elite Hewitt School in Manhattan, the New York Times reports. Kaufmann took college classes after his retirement and obtained a master’s degree in classics at the City University of New York.
Since then, Kaufmann has worked at three schools, including his present employer Hewitt, where he teaches Latin to eighth and ninth graders.
The Times interviewed Kaufmann along with others who pursued advanced degrees later in life. “Whether such retiree-students find auditing classes too passive, want to play a role in a second chosen field or just want to expand their knowledge,” the story says, “officials at graduate schools say it is now routine to count a sprinkling of them pursuing another degree.
