Mace General Counsel Gets 6 Months Home Confinement Over Illegal Workers
The general counsel of Mace Security International Inc. was sentenced yesterday by a federal judge to six months of home confinement and a year of probation for his role in hiring undocumented Mexican immigrants to work at company car washes in the Philadelphia area.
Robert Kramer pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor count concerning the employment of more than 50 illegal workers, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. He could have been sentenced to as much as six months in prison.
U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones II also is requiring Kramer to pay a $75,000 fine from his own personal funds and speak to local law students about corporate responsibility. Although he didn’t admit knowledge, Kramer admitted that he should have known about the car wash division’s employment of the undocumented workers, because he was its chief operating officer.
A spokesman for the company, which still employs Kramer, said in a written statement that it “supports Mr. Kramer’s decision to conclude the unfortunate episode by the guilty plea,” reports Corporate Counsel.
