Highlighted by a major product announcement by CEO Jack Newton during his planned keynote address, the 2017 Clio Cloud Conference will get underway Monday morning in New Orleans.

The conference, which runs through Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel near the French Quarter, boasts 50 speakers who will discuss the Clio platform and broader, ongoing trends in legal technology and business.

“The Clio Cloud Conference brings together the best and brightest from the legal, business, and technology worlds,” according to the conference’s website. The site also says the conference is a venue for “educating, growing, and actively solving points of contention for lawyers and their clients.”

Clio will also release its 2017 Legal Trends Report. Started last year, the benchmarking report “outlines key industry metrics for billing rates, hours billed, fee structures, and more—with detailed analyses for specific states, practice areas, and seasonality,” according to Clio’s website. The 2016 report is free to all.

Other keynote speakers for this year’s event include Preet Bharara, the former U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York and brand new podcast host and CNN senior legal analyst; Haben Girma, a disability rights advocate and 2017 ABA Legal Rebel; and Col. Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut and fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force.

Attorneys can collect CLE credits through the four educational tracks at the conference: legal technology, business of law, and two Clio University tracks—Seminars and Lectures. The Clio tracks will provide introductory presentations for those new to the platform and deeper dives for the seasoned user. To compliment these talks, there will be hands-on demonstrations and a help desk dubbed the “Smart Bar” for current and potential users of the platform.

The legal technology track will cover traditional issues, like electronic discovery and cybercrime, and more novel topics, like the use of virtual and augmented reality sensors in the courtroom and how to build a chatbot. The business of law track will opine on the effective use of data by law firms, how to take advantage of social media and how millennials are people who can be understood as both clients and colleagues.

In an effort to promote a work-life balance, running and yoga sessions are scheduled.

Other scheduled speakers include Andy Wilson, CEO of Logikull; Becky Bush, a development manager at Google; Joshua Browder, founder of DoNotPay and also a 2017 ABA Legal Rebel; Julia Shapiro, CEO of Hire an Esquire; Kevin O’Keefe, CEO of LexBlog; Mark Britton, CEO of Avvo; and Sam Glover, editor-in-chief at Lawyerist.com.

The ABA Journal is a media co-sponsor of the event.
