Craig Kimsel had reportedly built a tall fence with a locked gate around his home in Kailua, Hawaii, and sought a restraining order.

But Daniel Kahanaoi allegedly got through and shot the Honolulu criminal defense attorney to death last week. Kahanaoi, 45, has been charged with murder and other offenses and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to KHNL.

Kahanaoi and Kimsel dated the same woman, sparking Kahanaoi’s animosity, according to authorities and Kimsel’s family. They say Kimsel had notified police of previous alleged incidents of vandalism and threats by Kahanaoi, but to no avail, reports KGMB.

“I mean my son is an attorney. As an attorney he knows how to file these things but it doesn’t seem to matter does it,” says Kimsel’s mother, Barbara Ankersmit.

At an Oahu District Court hearing on Friday, Kahanaoi’s sister-in-law said there are two sides to every story, reports KHON. Another hearing is scheduled this week.
