Three other defendants involved in shooting a Michigan attorney through the door of his suburban Detroit home last year in a botched robbery attempt got hefty sentences in December.

However, Christopher Hernandez-Montiel played a lesser role in the crime and cooperated with authorities in the Oakland County CircuIt Court case. On Monday, he got one year and, with credit for time served, will be eligible for release in six months, reports the Oakland Press.

Attorney David Zacks was seriously injured but survived.

Hernandez-Montiel, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree conspiracy to commit home invasion last month in exchange for having other charges dismissed. He apologized in court, saying that he never intended anyone to get hurt and made a horrible mistake.

He previously admitted driving the three other defendants to Zacks’ home in Bloomfield Hills, then taking them to Detroit to get a gun when they realized someone was inside, then driving the trio back to Zacks’ home. They exited the vehicle and Hernandez-Montiel heard gunshots minutes later, he said.
