Man who flung cash into crowd at Mall of America is cited for disorderly conduct
A Minnesota man who flung $1,000 in dollar bills into a crowd at Mall of America on Friday has been cited for disorderly conduct.
Serge Vorobyov, 29, of Apple Valley threw the money from an upper-floor railing into the crowd below while singers performed “Let It Snow,” report the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Associated Press.
The money was stamped with the address for a YouTube video in which Vorobyov says he wanted to spread some holiday cheer with his last $1,000. “I don’t see how holiday cheer is disorderly conduct,” he says on the video.
Vorobyov says on the video that he had “a really tough year”—he is going through a divorce and he lost his car hauling business. He told AP he had hoped his estranged wife would show up for the stunt and that he would be able to win her back, but she didn’t accept his invitation.
He also told the wire service he wanted the publicity in hopes of getting his cat back from his estranged wife.
Mall of America spokeswoman Sarah Schmidt said Vorobyov could have caused a serious situation.
Updated at 4:30 p.m. to state that the money was flung from an upper-floor railing.
