The layoffs took place months ago, but Manatt Phelps & Phillips and Clifford Chance are just now confirming them.

Since October 2008, Manatt Phelps laid off a total of 12 attorneys, 3 paralegals and 32 administrative staff nationwide, the firm says in a written statement provided to Above the Law.

And Clifford Chance, which announced layoffs of 20 litigation associates in New York and Washington, D.C., in October, now says that it cut 35 support staff at these offices in December 2008, reports Legal Week.

"Following the downsizing of the U.S. practice, the firm has also sublet 11,000 square feet in its New York office to Kilpatrick Stockton," Legal Week writes.

I’m really glad that I don’t work for Clifford, Chance (and so are my sisters and my cousins and my aunts).
