Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara will not be leaving his position after Donald Trump becomes president.
Bharara told reporters about his plans after meeting with Trump on Wednesday, report Politico, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.).
The Wall Street Journal called the development “a surprise move that could signal the president-elect is serious about cracking down on Wall Street wrongdoing.” Bharara, who is known for pursuing insider-trading and political-corruption cases, has been dubbed the “sheriff of Wall Street.”
Preet said Trump and Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions have both asked him to stay in the position. In his meeting with Trump on Wednesday, Bharara told reporters, Trump asked him to discuss “whether or not I’d be prepared to stay on as the United States attorney to do the work as we have done it, independently, without fear or favor for the last seven years.”
“We had a good meeting,” Bharara said. “I said I would absolutely consider staying on. I agreed to stay on.”
