Plan to impress girlfriend with phony divorce decree backfires for man charged with forgery
In an apparent attempt to please his girlfriend, a man allegedly forged his current wife’s signature on a false divorce decree.
Edward Brown, 45, has been divorced at least once. He allegedly used the divorce decree from the prior marriage to create a falsified divorce decree for his current marriage, the Associated Press reports. Brown is accused of forging his wife’s signature on it, along with changing dates and the case number. He then mailed the phony document to his girlfriend and told her it was real, so that she would think he was not married, according to the AP.
Arrested Friday and charged with misdemeanor forgery, Brown was being held at the jail in Dorchester County, S.C., the AP reports. If he is found guilty, he will face up to three years in prison and a discretionary fine, says the Summerville Patch.
