Maryland lawmakers have backed off threats to pull funding for a law clinic that pursued a controversial pollution lawsuit against poultry producer Perdue, one of the state’s largest employers.

Legislators reconciling bills in the state House and Senate decided Tuesday evening to keep the funding intact, the Baltimore Sun reports. A Senate bill had withheld $250,000 from the University of Maryland law clinic unless it provided information on clients and cases.

The compromise bill, which must be approved by both chambers, still seeks the information, legislator Lowell Stoltzfus told the Sun. But by removing the funding threat, the legislature has “relieved them of any responsibility for giving an honest answer,” he said.
