A Texas lawyer who serves as senior counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has been tapped by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig to oversee the operations of the Los Angeles Dodgers, reports the Am Law Daily.

A three-term member of the state legislature, starting at age 25, before he went to law school, J. Thomas Schieffer also has experience as a United States diplomat and former president of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Selig used his extraordinary “best interest of baseball” powers to put Schieffer in charge of the team due to financial problems owner Frank McCourt has been having following a divorce battle in which his wife also claimed ownership of of the team.

McCourt reportedly may have retained Sullivan & Cromwell to represent him in an effort to regain control of the Dodgers, the Am Law Daily says.
