Meet Michele Bachmann, Oral Roberts Law Grad and Former IRS Tax Attorney
Now that Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann is a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination and portraying herself as a potential tax reformer, her background as an Oral Roberts University law graduate and tax attorney is news even though it dates back to the late 1980s.
Bachmann also earned a master’s degree in tax Law at the College of William and Mary after graduating from Oral Roberts in 1986. Then she went on to work for the Internal Revenue Service, in the chief counsel’s office in St. Paul, Minn., for four years, the Star Tribune reports in a lengthy article on her work as a law student and lawyer.
Although the newspaper describes her work for the IRS as “low key,” she was a standout at law school, remembered by classmates as smart and interested in integrating religious principles and the law.
“I always thought she was a very serious student,” law school classmate Dean Burnetti, who now works as a personal injury lawyer in Florida, tells the Star Tribune. “She was that type, always on that front row and always attentive.”
In a speech earlier this year, Bachmann recalled serving as a research assistant to a constitutional law professor, John Eidsmoe, who was described by Burnetti as one of the most influential members of the Oral Roberts faculty.
She did not respond to the Star Tribune’s interview requests and written questions. Her Minnesota law license is now inactive, and she doesn’t currently practice.
