For 17 of the last 19 years, Federal Express manager Graham Blackman-Harris has been in line for the Supreme Court’s opening day of the term.

Blackman-Harris, the “least cynical man in Washington,” was planning to be in line again today, the Washington Post reports. One time he missed the first Monday in October because of illness, and the other time because he was closing on his house. “Every American should see the Supreme Court in action,” he tells the newspaper.

Blackman-Harris, 45, moved to the United States with his family from Barbados when he was in high school. He became a Supreme Court junkie when he was visiting Washington, D.C., and a guide at the Capitol suggested he check out the court.

“I could see Thurgood Marshall on the bench,” he recalled in the Post interview. “I was hooked. That voice! His voice just echoed off the marble. It was awesome.”

The Posts also interviewed another aficionado, Mike Sacks, a former ABA Journal guest blogger who tried to be first in line at the court for an entire law school semester. Sacks is now working as a Supreme Court reporter for the Huffington Post. He observes that Blackman-Harris has a remarkable “hope and enthusiasm for the country.”
