North Carolina’s Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice is snapping up a small Charleston, S.C., firm, bringing its lawyer total to 550.

With the acquisition of Buist Moore Smythe McGee, the firm will add another South Carolina location and maritime practice, according to a news release and the Charleston Regional Business Journal.

Womble Carlyle will have 550 attorneys after adding the Charleston firm to its portfolio. Womble’s release notes that it currently counts more than 530 lawyers in its ranks, while Buist Moore has 44 lawyers.

“The combining of Buist Moore and Womble Carlyle will provide Womble Carlyle clients access to a wider network of strategically important relationships,” Keith Vaughan, chairman of Womble Carlyle’s Firm Management Committee, said in the release. “Charleston has emerged as a high-growth area within the pro-business state of South Carolina.”

The merger is effective April 30.
