The judge who sentenced NFL superstar Michael Vick to 23 months in prison is apparently a believer in rehabilitation—and a football fan.

U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson tells the Washington Post that Vick is “having a terrific season” as a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. “He’s an example of how the system can work,” Hudson told the newspaper. “I’m very happy for him. I wish him the best of success.”

Now Hudson has drawn another high-profile case, this one involving the constitutionality of the federal health care bill. Two judges have already upheld the new law; Hudson may be the first to overturn it, observers told the newspaper.

Hudson was “exceedingly cordial” in hearings on the legal challenge, although he expressed skepticism when he questioned government lawyers, the story says. In July, he issued an opinion refusing a motion to dismiss.

Hudson told the Post he has a more even-handed attitude than during his early days as a prosecutor known as “Hang ‘Em High Henry.”

“Life does that to you,” he told the newspaper. “That’s something that comes with time and understanding. To know that you’re not always right. That there are two sides to every story. And you’ve got to keep an open mind.”
