Updated: A law firm older than the state of Minnesota closed its doors Monday.

Moore Costello & Hart was founded in 1855, three years before the territory became a state, reports the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. The firm declined to divulge the reasons for its dissolution to the Business Journal.

Former Chief Justice Warren Burger of the U.S. Supreme Court was once a partner, joining the firm when it was still called Boyesen, Otis, Brill & Faricy, after his graduation from the St. Paul College of Law, according to the firm’s website. He remained a partner at the firm (which was then called Otis, Faricy & Burger) for 22 years until he was appointed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1956.

A Minnesota Law & Politics post provides a little more background about the firm’s roots.

Updated Aug. 16 to add detail to the firm’s history and to note that the firm declined to comment on the reasons it is closing.
