The Clinton, Conn., lawyer who disappeared in July after confessing he embezzled money from clients has apparently committed suicide.

Police found the body of 59-year-old Jonathan Hoyt on Monday in an apartment he had been renting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, since the end of August, the Connecticut Law Tribune reports. Police said there was no indication of foul play.

Hoyt’s landlord, semi-retired lawyer Richard Hileman, told the legal newspaper that Hoyt rented the apartment under an assumed name, but signed his real name to a suicide note. Hileman received the note in the mail.

Police were baffled by Hoyt’s disappearance. They said he may have taken as much as $700,000 from about a dozen clients.
