Mississippi voters on Tuesday rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment that says a fertilized egg is a person.

In October, observers were predicting the so-called personhood amendment would succeed. Opponents said the measure would have classified abortion and some kinds of birth control as murder. CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post have stories on the vote.

Some abortion foes had opposed the measure because of fears it would lead to a Supreme Court decision reaffirming Roe v. Wade.
