Despite extensive tests, doctors at Seattle Children’s couldn’t figure out why Carmen Boyce’s two young children weren’t eating normally. But they did notice that eating problems arose only when Boyce was alone with them at the hospital.

Charged in 2013 with faking medical issues and encouraging physicians to perform unnecessary medical procedures on her children, the 35-year-old took a plea deal Tuesday that will likely spare her time behind bars, the Seattle PI reports.

Without admitting guilt, Boyce acknowledged that the state likely had enough evidence to convict her on two misdemeanor charges in the King County medical child abuse case. Had the prosecution taken place, it would have been the first of its kind in the state.

Boyce’s two daughters, now 6 and 4 years old, are in good health after being removed from Boyce’s care.
