Mom gets 16 years for child neglect after daughter, 9, dies of diabetic complications
A Texas mom who was accused by authorities of failing to properly manage her diabetic daughter’s diet has been sentenced to 16 years for child neglect following the girl’s death, at age 9, from complications of the disease.
Georgia Jones, 31, was sentenced Monday, after pleading guilty to felony injury to a child, according to the Associated Press and the Dallas Morning News. She had faced a maximum of 20 years.
An earlier Dallas Morning News article, published in 2009 after Chasity Butler’s death, says the child died in her mother’s bed, next to a bag of candy and a partially eaten cupcake.
“Chasity’s diabetes was not monitored properly causing her to be constantly sick and in bed rather than leading a normal life like other children her age,” stated police documents in the case. Georgia Jones also was accused of failing to attend a class about diabetes care, after her daughter was diagnosed with the illness.
Child Protective Services inspected the family’s Dallas home days before Chastity died and described her as “upbeat” when she talked to investigators.
The girl’s death, in May 2008, was determined to have been from natural causes, due to diabetic complications, the AP reports.
