The mother of a 5-year-old handcuffed by police after other efforts failed to calm the girl down during a kindergarten temper tantrum in 2005 has filed suit over the incident.

Inga Akins, 27, seeks damages from the Pinellas County School Board and Fairmount Park Elementary for alleged negligence, malicious prosecution and a civil-rights violation, reports the Gradebook blog of the St. Petersburg Times.

Ja'eisha Lashay Scott, now 8, was so traumatized by the handcuffing that she is still afraid of school and the police and will need long-term therapy, Akins says In the Pinellas Circuit Court suit. It was filed March 12.

The family is represented by attorney Willie Gary.

This should encourage the little one to be well-behaved in the future.

This is absolutely ridiculous.  I saw a video of a Florida kindergartener who repeatedly hit two teachers, tore things off of the classroom wall, and threw things off of the desk in the principal’s office.  She only calmed down after the principal said she was calling the police.  I believe the school called her mom to come and get the child, but the mom said she could not leave work.  If this is the same child that I saw on the video, she should have been handcuffed because none of the other things worked to calm the child and she absolutely was out of control.

I hope the teachers and administrators who were subjected to her abuse sue the mother.  No teacher should have to be abused by an out of control child.
