The National Lawyers Guild is organizing more than 250 legal observers who will monitor the response to protesters during the inauguration.

The legal observers include lawyers, law students and other volunteers, BuzzFeed News reports.

Washington, D.C., lawyer Mark Goldstone, who has previously worked as an observer, says interest is high. “The legal community is coming out in a way that I have never seen,” he told BuzzFeed.

The legal observers will take notes and record arrests, providing documentation that can be used, if needed, in court. The information might be used by the defense in prosecutions, or in civil rights suits against police. Lawyers will be available to respond to phone calls from protesters and to provide free representation in court.
