Morgan, Lewis & Bockius came out on top in a Corporate Counsel survey of law firms most often used in Fortune 100 litigation last year.

Helping propel Morgan Lewis into the top spot was employment and labor work, making up half of the matters the firm worked on and captured in the survey, Corporate Counsel reports. Second on the list were employment firms Littler Mendelson and Jones Day.

The survey points to the importance of workplace lawsuits, according to the story. Labor class actions have quadrupled since 2001. At the same time, many companies are consolidating labor and employment work, hiring fewer law firms to handle more of their cases.

The survey took its data from Thomson Reuters databases that monitor law firms representing companies in lawsuits. The study focused on five areas and found these firms led each category:

• Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom for corporate transactions.

• Greenberg Traurig for commercial law and contracts.

• Shook, Hardy & Bacon for torts and negligence.

• Jones Day and Baker Botts for intellectual property, replacing IP boutiques as the firms handling most of this litigation.

• Littler Mendelson for labor and employment litigation.

Updated at 11:39 a.m. to indicate that Littler Mendelson topped the survey’s labor and employment litigation list.
