A California lawyer who calls himself “Mr. Ticket” for his specialty fighting traffic tickets has announced a “big decision” in the fight against red-light cameras.

San Diego lawyer Mitchell Mehdy told 10News.com that the decision by an Orange County judge will “level the playing field” in red-light cases.

Mehdy argues that cameras can’t be cross-examined in court about the way they work, and too often police officers called to testify don’t understand the mechanics. The judge agreed in a decision affecting possibly hundreds of red-light cases in San Diego, the story says.

SanDiego6.com interprets the ruling as requiring an expert witness to testify in ticket challenges. But San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith told 10News.com that officers who are well-trained and able to explain the system will suffice.
